The first thing that comes to mind when people hear Cengkareng is the airport located there. Yet in the past, this area was just a small village on the outskirts of Jakarta, dominated by rice fields. Interestingly, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport is actually not located in Cengkareng District, West Jakarta!
Cengkareng itself is one of the districts in West Jakarta, DKI Jakarta. Covering an area of 26.54 square kilometers, it is divided into six sub-districts: West Cengkareng, East Cengkareng, Duri Kosambi, Kapuk, Kedaung Kali Angke, and Rawa Buaya. Its borders are:
The origin of the name Cengkareng has a long history. In one version, it comes from the Sundanese language, namely Cikangkareng. In Sundanese, “Ci” refers to Cai (water), usually linked to rivers such as Ciliwung, Cisadane, or Cikeas. Meanwhile, Kangkareng refers to a type of hornbill bird with a casque on its beak.
Another version suggests that the word Cengkareng comes from the Dutch word “Tjankaar”, meaning chuckling. However, no clear explanation exists about the addition of the “-ang” suffix that eventually formed Tjangkaarang on Peter De Haan’s map. This name had already been used before the second half of the 18th century, when a high-ranking VOC official in Batavia, David Johan Smith, owned land in Cengkareng.
In the 1881 Regerings Almanak, it was recorded that Johan Smith commissioned architect Michiel Romp to build a two-story Indische-style country house, later known as Landhuis Tjengkareng. Unfortunately, the building was destroyed by a fire in September 1945. The land was later taken over by the Dutch company Firma Brijnst en Vinju, which rented it to Tan Oen Tjong.
Tan Oen Tjong, a Chinese-Indonesian landlord, converted the land into plantations and rice fields, producing rice, coconuts, and animal feed grass. These farming activities lasted until the construction of the new airport to replace Kemayoran Airport, formalized by a presidential instruction on October 1, 1984. Gradually, the airport replaced the remnants of Landhuis Tjengkareng, flattening the land.
Today, Cengkareng has rapidly transformed, replacing agriculture and green open spaces with shopping centers, residential complexes, hotels, and commercial areas. Still, it remains significant as the gateway to Indonesia’s archipelago via Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.
When it comes to strategic locations, Cengkareng stands out. Not only does it provide access to major transport routes, but it also serves as a gateway for both domestic and international arrivals.
Its biggest attraction is undoubtedly the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, which connects Indonesia to the world. Beyond that, Cengkareng boasts modern public facilities that support business growth.
The district also offers high-quality amenities—from shopping malls and culinary destinations to Grade A healthcare facilities. Cengkareng presents a clean, well-maintained, and organized environment, making it an attractive area for both living and investment. Unsurprisingly, property values here increase steadily every year. For real estate investors, owning property in Cengkareng promises long-term gains.
Jakarta’s transportation network is extensive, and traveling to or from Cengkareng is relatively convenient.
Cengkareng is home to many business hubs, making it an attractive area for investment. Notable centers include Cengkareng Business City and ACCURATE Business Center, both popular choices for local enterprises.
