Kramat Jati

Kramat Jati is one of the sub-districts in East Jakarta. It is bordered by Jatinegara to the north, Ciracas and Pasar Rebo to the south, Makassar to the east, and Pasar Minggu and Pancoran to the west.

Covering an area of 13.34 square kilometers, Kramat Jati consists of seven urban villages: Kramat Jati, Batuampar, Balekambang, Kampung Tengah, Dukuh, Cawang, and Cililitan.

Kramat Jati has a long history, both in terms of its territorial development and the origin of its name. According to Wikipedia, Kramat Jati was once a district under the Residency of Ommelanden van Batavia centered in Depok, based on the Besluit Bestuurorganisatie Batavia en Ommelanden recorded in Staatsblad 1949 №64. At that time, Kramat Jati was an onder-district under Condet District, which also included Mampang Prapatan, Pasar Minggu, Pasar Rebo, and Pondok Gede.

Linguistically, the name Kramat Jati is closely tied to mystical folklore. One version states that the name came from the many teak (jati) trees growing in the area, some of which were centuries old and massive in size. These teak trees reportedly grew near what is now the main road in front of the National Police Hospital (RS Polri Soekanto).

According to Zaenuddin HM in his book 212 Asal Usul Djakarta Tempo Doeloe (October 2012), one of these giant teak trees was considered sacred by the locals, believed to hold mystical powers. Many people came to pray at the tree, hoping their wishes would be granted. Religious leaders of the time condemned the practice, leading to the felling of several “sacred” teak trees.

As a result of this tree-cutting, the area became known as Kramat Jati—meaning “the place of the sacred teak trees that were cut down.”

Another source mentions that the area was once called “Kampung Kramat Jati,” formed from the merging of two villages across from each other: Kampung Kramat to the west and Kampung Jati to the east of Jalan Raya Bogor. Het Nieuws van den Dag voor Nederlandsch-Indië, a Dutch-language daily in the 1910s, noted that the name “Kampung Kramat” was linked to an old sacred cemetery in the area.

Historically, Kramat Jati was a fertile area—both agriculturally and economically. In addition to teak trees, it also served as a rest stop for travelers going to and from Bogor.
