Covering an area of approximately 12.94 square kilometers, Pulo Gadung is a subdistrict located in East Jakarta. It consists of seven urban villages: Kayu Putih, Jati, Rawamangun, Pisangan Timur, Cipinang, Jatinegara Kaum, and Pulo Gadung.
With a population of more than 200,000 people, Pulo Gadung borders Jatinegara to the south, Cakung to the east, Kelapa Gading to the north, and Matraman as well as Cempaka Putih to the west.
Historically, the subdistrict was officially established in the 1950s. The name Pulo Gadung comes from pulo (land) and gadung (a type of tuber similar to jicama) which used to grow abundantly in the area.
